Tips for an authentic day in the picturesque seaside town.
Sausalito is a charming and unique village nestled into the the hillside perched above the water. It’s located right before (or after) the Golden Gate Bridge, depending on which way you are traveling, offering some of the best views and an idyllic Bay Area experience..
While living in Sausalito, we learned the ins and out, shortcuts, scenic spots and where to eat. We also learned Sausalito is divided into two worlds–first by its weather but also divided between residents and tourists. If you’re looking for an authentic visit in and around Sausalito keep reading below.

Eating
Sometimes a big sit-down meal can be more trouble than its worth when you have limited time. There is no shortage of great restaurants in Sausalito, but here are a few options that are quicker and also loved by the locals;
- Head to Golden Gate Market for delicious sandwiches to-go. Inside this modest convenience store, tucked in the back is a deli counter that makes amazing sandwiches.
- For delicious pizza and a cozy atmosphere head to Bar Bocce. If you don’t have time to sit and enjoy the waterfront dining, you can order your pizza to-go and find a bench along the docks. Their pizza is amazing and features seasonal ingredients.
- Head to Equator Coffee (formerly Cibo) for an awesome cup of coffee and a snack.

Walking or Hiking
Walking along the waterfront offers some of the best views. Sometimes off the beaten path the views are even better.
- Meander down to the dock by Richarson St. The dock or walkway can be accessed either by Main or Richardson. Find a bench to sit and devour the views…and the sandwich you just bought at Golden Gate Market.
- For scenic hikes, there are limitless options. Many trails can be found starting near Fort Baker. But there are also small little trails tucked amongst the hilly streets in Sausalito (see itinerary below).
- Walk along Bridgeway to the Mill-Valley Sausalito path winding through the house boats then visit Heath Ceramics–a Bay Area gem and one of the highlights of Sausalito. Detailed information and tips on Sausalito’s floating home community can be found on Our Sausalito.

The Half-Day Itinerary – Coffee and aWalk
Start the morning with coffee and a walk. Park your car on the side of Bridgeway and grab a cup of excellent coffee from Equator Coffee. After you enjoy your coffee and get a bite to eat, take a stroll down Bridgeway (south). Check out a few shops if you care to, but make your way along the waterfront south to end where it merges into a walkway/dock off of Richardson St.
If you’re up for a breathless walk and views, cross over Sausalito Blvd. to Edwards Ave. following it up to Marion and take a hair pin right turn up the steep residential hill. At the top of Marion (on the left) is a trail head. If you’re feeling adventurous there’s a trail (flat grade) –walk along the path and take in the killer views.
The Half-Day Itinerary – Hiker’s Paradise
Start the morning hiking the SCA trail. It’s an advanced hike for those comfortable with stairs and a single-track trail. Park at the Spencer St. park n’ ride off the highway (west side) where there is the Morning Sun trailhead located across from the parking lot. There’s several sets of steep stairs through the eucalyptus forest. At the top of the stairs, take a left turn on the Alta trail and head to the SCA trailhead. The SCA trail is perfect for Marin Headland views–stay a long the trail until you see the Golden Gate Bridge peaking over the hill. Turn around at any point.
Once you’re back at your car, wind your way down the hill, taking in the views, and head to Bar Bocce. Relax or play bocce ball and enjoy delicious pizza after your hike. You earned it!

There are so many things to do in Sausalito like touring the house boats, kayaking or take a quick ferry into SF. We think the best way to see Sausalito is just relaxing and taking in the stunning views.
